10th June 2010 - The start of the East Coast…..Melbourne to Sydney

Well g’day mate. How is it going my dear friends? I am doing very well and have just recently started my adventure up the east coast of Australia. My departure date for Melbourne was 2nd June which gave us a 3 month window to conquer the coast. I am travelling with Izzy, a girl I know from uni. She has a car and a tent and a stove and the plan is to spend as little money as possible and proper slum it whilst travelling.

So we awoke on the Wednesday extremely hungover and with a lot to sort out before our trip begun. I finished packing my belongings and said my goodbyes to the people in my hostel. It was quite sad to leave them all considering I had been there quite a while and had become pretty good friends with a lot of people. But I suppose that’s just the way things go out here and there’s not really much you can do. We then proceeded to do our food shopping which went surprisingly well, owning a gas stove with only one ring we needed to plan carefully and ensure we bought cheap food which was quick and easy to cook. If I would have had to do this myself I would have definitely struggled but luckily Izzy was much better at this than myself and we came out with a very successful shop with some promising meals to look forward to. And so the road trip began, I drove on the first day and we decided to try and break a long stretch of the journey but after about 5 hours of driving it was already dark and it was time for a sleep. We found a truckers stop and decided it would be best to just sleep in the car. I was slightly concerned to how this would be but it actually turned out to be fine. I had my sleeping bag and although it was a bit cramped, I managed to sleep fine and was nice and fresh in the morning for the rest of the journey. Melbourne to Sydney is actually only about a 10 hour drive, but we had several stops on the way which we intended to stop at. We are basically using the Lonely Planet as our bible to Australia and are therefore basing most of our stops from what the book recommends.

Our first real stop (not including the night in the truck stop) was in Batemans Bay - cleverly nicknamed by myself as Batman’s Bay. We arrived here when it was already dark and it was hammering with rain and again came to the joint decision that it would be no fun setting up a tent in the dark let alone in the rain and so sleeping in the car was our only option. Batman’s bay is a small town with very little in it, although I can imagine if you catch it on a nice sunny day it would be much better. So we had a look around to see what we could do in the evening and the only real option we had was to go to the cinema, and unfortunately, the only real option of a film to see was Sex in the City 2. Yes, that’s right, I went to see Sex in the City 2 in the cinema, laugh it up!! Anyway, we had also decided that to make the film more enjoyable a bag of goon would help things along. So we took a bag in with us and although we got quite drunk I must say the film was still terrible, and luckily for me Izzy felt exactly the same. I have never left a film before the end in my entire life, and I’m so happy that this was my first. We went back to the car, made some soup on our little gas stove and then hit the sack, fully prepared for the long drive again the following day. Morning came and I must say we both felt terrible, however some worse than other and so it was my responsibility to drive. Lame!!

Our following stop was to be based in Jervis Bay. We had found a national park there where we could camp and arrived during the day to allow for plenty of light whilst setting up the tent. The national park was actually really cool, and backed onto a beautiful beach which was more or less deserted when we went down there. After some exploring and a close encounter with a wallaby we got in the tent and decided to crash. It was still early but I suppose 2 nights sleeping in a car had really taken its toll. It did unfortunately rain pretty savagely that night, and after Izzy has flooded half of the tent we managed to get some sleep and it was actually fine! Once again we left here reasonably early and set off to our following destination, Wollongong.

Wollongong is a slightly larger town just before Sydney. We again decided to camp in Bulli national park which is not far from the town of Wollongong. Our tent site this time was however not so picturesque, in fact it was actually about 10 meters away from a graveyard. This was reasonably freaky, but I came to the conclusion that I have seen more than enough zombie films to be able to survive if anything were to happen. This put my worries at rest but for some reason I don’t think Izzy was quite so confident. Anywho, we headed into the city and had a walk around the shops before heading to a side road to cook our dinner. We must have looked like a right couple of hobo’s sitting there eating, but we had chicken curry and I must say it was of the highest quality. We then stayed in Wollongong and went to a bar for a few drinks…well Izzy was driving, but I decided not to let this get in the way and I had a few drinks. It was a good night and we left not too late and headed back to the camp site for some much deserved rest.

And so 4 days later and Sydney was upon us, I had arranged to stay with some friends that I had previously met back in Bondi. They were more than welcoming and we were extremely grateful when we arrived and it felt so good to just sit down on a couch when we arrived. 4 days in a car really does take its toll. So we decided to just rest on our first night, chill on the couch and eat some food. As much as I enjoy travelling, you can’t beat home comforts. The following day we decided to explore the city and met up with Kirt and Shelly. They had just arrived in Sydney and it was wiked to meet up with them, we went for a coffee and had a walk around, not much too interesting. The following day was already arranged on what we were going to do. Domino’s and Australia’s got talent was on the menu after some chilling on the beach. This was a pretty standard day but overall was actually pretty good. Once again, you appreciate home comforts so much more after such a long time of not having them.

So that brings me to today. We went out early and had a lovely 9 holes of golf, turns out spending loads of time not practising doesn’t help your game at all. Me and Izzy went round in 50 on a Par 28, pretty terrible I know, but a solid effort. We are meeting back up with Kirt and Shelly tonight to see what the Sydney club scene has to offer.

Thanks for reading peeps and I hope all is well back home.

Peace out guys

27th May 2010 - The end of Bondi and the Glory of Melbourne

Good evening all, well hasn’t it been a long time since we’ve spoken. I kind of came to the conclusion that by updating the blog too often would become boring and tedious for the both of us, so with larger gaps I will be able to tell you more and the suspense will hopefully make it more exciting to both read and write.

So where did we leave off? Oh yes, Bondi, well I left there not too long after we last spoke in search of the American Dream……basically I needed some work and could not find any in Sydney, so I decided to go to Melbourne where it is cold in the thought that there wouldn’t be too many backpackers and would therefore be much easier to find work. I flew from Sydney which was only a 2 hour flight, I could have taken the coach but that would have taken 12 hours so it was a bit of a no brainer to be honest! So upon arriving in Melbourne I made my way to my hostel via the shuttle bus and then a taxi. I decided to stay in a hostel called ‘The Ritz for Backpackers’ and if anyone is ever in Melbourne and looking for a hostel I would highly recommend this place. Of all the hostels I have stayed in so far this is by far the nicest, friendliest, cleanest etc. My first night consisted of meeting a group of welsh lads and another few boys from the north. Upon my arrival they were already drinking goon and so I kindly decided to join in and make a night of it. We went out and I got to check out a lot of the scenery of where I was staying and what exactly was going on. My hostel is on the main strip of bars and clubs and is only a 5 minute walk away from the beach. Its just a shame its so cold here all of the time. I only packed 2 jumpers with me for the entire trip and I have to wear them all of the time…..people must think I’m a right skank. Anyway, I have decided in this entry not to go through a day by day routine for 2 main reasons; 1)I have done a lot of going out and drinking and we all know how them nights turn out don’t we……very drunk….eating fast food…..and falling asleep in the tv room of the hostel. 2) I have been in Melbourne for ages now and after not updating my blog for so long I cannot remember a hell of a lot since being here. Bad times ay!

I have however met up with a few people from home since I have been here. Turns out 2 people from my uni, Izzy and Robbie, are also in Melbourne and I have met up with them for a few nights. Izzy also very kindly set me up with a job in a bar at weekends. Its only glass collecting but the pay is good and its actually nice to have some money coming in for a change instead of constantly going out. Its also nice to see a familiar face once in a while. Although I have enjoyed travelling alone, its always good to have someone you know around, just makes things that bit better.

So it also turns out there is a casino about a 10 minute tram ride away from me. Now those of you that know me well will also know of my love for casino’s and gambling! So it would be fair to assume that I have been there a few times…..and your assumptions would be correct! Obviously I have lost money in there, but it is also a landmark moment as for the first time in my casino career I have also left with MORE money than I entered with. This has now happened on 2 occasions and I am extremely happy with this outcome. Maybe there is a future in it for me……hmmmmm……doubtful but we can all dream.

And to be perfectly honest not much else has happened of these past few weeks. It has kind of reminded me of my first 6 weeks at university being in halls. There is just a constant flow of going out at night and sleeping all day. To be honest it does start to become slightly tedious and that is why I have decided to travel up the coast a lot sooner than planned. I am actually leaving Melbourne to head up the East Coast on the 2nd June. I had a very good offer from Izzy and decided to take her up on it. So we will be on a massive road trip to warmer climates and hopefully some amazing scenes. This is where I will begin to post pictures and update my blog more regularly as I will be moving from place to place on a regular basis and my real travelling can begin.

I hope this section has not been too dull for you…….but keep posted as the real adventure starts in 6 days…..bring it on.

22 April 2010 - Moving to Bondi

Good afternoon all. Howz things going? I know its been a while since my last update, but things have quietened down a bit since we last spoke. I have kinda come to the realisation that im not really on a year long holiday and by going out every night and eating out every day I will run out of money and have to come home a lot sooner than expected.

So what has happened since ‘The Beginning Chapter’…ok….so lets get this out the way first of all, yes I did wake up for the arsenal vs. spurs game at 5am, yes I did see Danny Rose score a ridiculous goal (let’s face it, any squirrel can find a nut once in a while) and yes I did see us get beaten. No excuses, we lost! And yes I have read all about the Wigan game and am fully aware of how appalling we have been…..all I have to say to this is that im in Australia and no one here cares about football and none of you can give me any bant cos your all the way over the other side of the world. So that’s the end of that!

Ok, so after watching the defeat I went back to bed in a foul, bitter mood, not to awake until about 5pm. By this time it was about time I started drinking, so I sat outside the hostel in the social area with a crate of beer and drank long into the night. I mainly received bant from all the spurs fans there, but by this time I was drunk so really couldn’t care less. There were quite a few cool people I met there, no one to particularly make note of (which may seem harsh but…..meh) so I ended up crashing about 2am. A good relaxing night in all!

The following day I felt guilty about spending so much time in bed and so decided to jump on the tourist bandwagon. I got up reasonably early and walked down to see the Sydney Opera House and Harbour bridge. They were both pretty cool and I had some lunch sitting on the harbour over looking these two famous monuments. Unfortunately I still did not have a working camera so no pictures which is a bit of a shocker, but there are plenty of pictures on the net etc. of these places, so I wasn’t getting myself too worked up. After walking around for a bit I decided I had seen enough and returned to the hostel. It was now Friday night and I was convinced by several people that it would be rude not to go out. So once again we sat outside with a crate of beer and cracked on. The hostel was running a trip to a club called Soho. In all honesty, it was poor. The music was good, a lot of house, but it was small, full of men and uber expensive. So after a few jager bombs and after tearing apart the D-floor for a while, I headed back with a few peeps and hit the hay. I actually had to check out at 9am the following day, so this was probably best.

11.30am Saturday morning I am rudely awoken to ‘This is a message for Adam Gotfraind, check out is at 9am. Please check out immediately to ensure you can receive your deposit back.’ Whoops, so I was up and out in about 20 minutes. I was moving down to Bondi Beach. This is where I mentioned in my previous post, I loved the place so much that I booked into a hostel on the beach front for a week and is where nat and ste live. This place really is amazing, I do have pictures now but I have no lead to link my camera to my pc……useless I know. Anyway, if ya wanna see it jus type Bondi Beach into Google and it’ll come up. So I spent most of the day on the beach, tanning it up, well trying to tan it up anyway then I was meant to be meeting Ste for drinks in the evening. I thought it best to have a short nap before which eventually turned into a 13 hour sleep and me waking up the following morning. In the words of Jo B ‘Oooops’.

So now it was Sunday, I had been invited to go out with Nat and her friend Shanie. Shanie is from East London and is a real cool gal. I had spent most of the day on the beach getting sunburnt and we were going to see a DJ called Derrek May. He was a house DJ and when we turned up to the club is was real nice. In the entrance was a massive room with really high ceilings and a huge circular bar in the middle of the room with a DJ in the corner. I thought it was amazing and couldn’t wait to see the main room where we would be. This was downstairs in the club and was…..how is the best way to describe it……small and grimey. There were loads of people packed into this tiny, really hot room, but the tunes were banging and I actually had a really good night. Cheap….it was not…but I still had a rite laugh. Shanie couldn’t keep up with the drinking pace however and went home early after being sick. Seems as though these londeners jus cant keep up with the pace ay. I arrived back at about 3am and staggered home in a less than respectable state. Swagga at its best!

Monday and Tuesday were quiet nights for me. This is where I decided to rest and mainly just chilled on the beach then watched TV in the evenings. During this time I did managed to get a charger for my camera which was a touch, but all in all they were pretty uneventful days.

So then came Wednesday and it was time for some more action. I was up early and went to do the ‘Skywalk’ with Ian, Aaron and Carly. The two guys are the blokes who I am currently in a dorm with and Carly is one of the chicks from upstairs. Skywalk is the highest building in Sydney and you basically get to walk around the viewing platform over glass panels. In all honesty, it was good, but not that good. Its always the same with tall buildings, you get really excited about going to the top of them then when you get there, its never really that good. But at least it was something to do which was a bit out of the ordinary. Sydney City Centre is actually really nice, there aren’t really the sorts of skyscrapers you see in London and other major cities, but its got a nice feel about the place and it seems to be reasonably relaxed for such a large place.

The evening of Wednesday was quite a big occasion in my Australian career so far. I was introduced to Goon. Your probably thinking the same as I was when I was told about this, what the hell is that. Well….Goon is a wine which you can buy out here. You get 4 litres of 12% (plus 10% extra free) white wine in a box. This stuff is absolute rocket fuel and at 10-12 bucks per box is absolutely perfect. Apparently its called Goon as this is the aboriginal word for pillow. Once people were finished with the drink, they would take the empty bag out of the box, blow it up and use is as a pillow. Quite clever I thought! Anyway, so this combined with drinking games = a real cheap night of getting hammered. So this ended in us going out and being refused from almost every club for being too intoxicated. Well not so much me, we all know how well I can hold my drink, but some people were a bit of a mess. They’re actually proper strict over here, a bit ridiculous if you ask me!! So it ended up in a dorm party instead, this kinda sucks when its 20 degrees and theres 8 of you in one room all drunk n that. You can imagine, not really the best but it was still fun. To be honest, from what I’ve heard there is no such thing and a not fun Goon night!

So anyway here I am again, laying on my bed, feeling terrible, writing my blog. I hope you enjoyed this chapter. Im getting the feeling that its getting a bit repetitive really, but what can I do!? Peace out rude boys, keep in touch, love you all and if any of you like what you hear and fancy a break, get ur asses out here!!

Oh by the way, for anyone reading this from the Oarsmen or a select few from 15a, everywhere here sells Mi Goreng noodles. At 61 cents per pack im basically living of them and we all know how good they are. You wouldn’t have believed how excited I was when I saw them!

Safe

14th April 2010 - The beginning chapter

So I have been away for just over a week and have done so much already. Starting by flying into Dubai I got to spend a quality 4 days staying with Luke. Having not seen him for just over 3 months it was great to get out there and see what he’s been up to and how he’s been living the high life. After being told that he was ‘bored of the yacht club’ I knew we would be rolling high. The first night ended in both of us passing out after a couple of Tika Buka Buka’s and some hilarious scenes. After being told we should be careful in Dubai when drinking as you really need to behave we decided to ignore this and use our English talents to cause all sorts of problems for people. We wont go into it much further than this but let’s just say we represented our country well.

The following two nights remained along the same lines with 5am finishes becoming pretty standard. I met a lot of his friends out there who were all a right laugh, but we ensured we put them in their place when it came to fifa. Turns out Stortford boys really are the best at x box. Apart from the gratuitous amounts of alcohol consumed I also got to look around the palm at some amazing villas and spent a day at a pretty cool waterpark. It was very busy which kind of sucked when it came to queuing, but was worth it especially for the leap of faith which I’m proud to say we forced Woo to do allowing her to achieve maximum man points. Well done girl!

After this it was time for me to leave Dubai. I had had such a good time I really wanted to stay there for longer but decided it would be better for me to fly on and get my Aussie adventure started. After all, he is a rockafella and can afford to come see me at any time, which had better be soon!

So after a gruelling 13 hour flight I arrived in Sydney. Luckily I was sat next to a pretty cool woman from New Zealand and we had the three seats between us. But it was still horrible….anyway, I arrive in Sydney only to find out my eyes were killing me and I had conjunctivitis. I blame this on my nephew who I will be having some serious words with upon my return, so if your reading this Freddie, heed my warning.

Being pretty jetlagged here I decided it would be best to ride it out and just sleep at night so that I could get into the swing of things as quickly as I could. I met a guy called mark who was staying in my dorm and we went for a couple of beers. He’s a really cool bloke who is running hip hop workshops in Sydney for underprivileged kids. He lives up in Byron Bay and said when im up there I can stay at his and he’ll teach me how to surf which im really looking forward to. After this I was so tired I slept immediately and had an awesome sleep. I was then in the swing of things and was ready to show oz what I am really made of.

So the following morning I had arranged to meet up with Natalie Bamber and Ste. She is the sister of a guy I met up in Liverpool whilst visiting max in February. So I travelled to Bondi Beach to meet them. This place is amazing. It is exactly 1 mile long strip of beach with pure white sands, surfers and loads of hot chicks. I went with Ste and met musical Steve. He is an Australian who is staying in Bondi beach and is a really cool guy. We all headed out for a few beers and worked our way down the strip where I then met up with Natalie and a few of her friends. About 6 beers later and 2 shots and I was feeling really drunk. I don’t know whether it was the sea air, the hot weather or me just being a lightweight, but I was really steaming. I decided it was best for me to leave before things got too out of control so I headed home and was asleep before I hit the pillow. Its really not too bad sharing a room with loads of other people. In fact the other night, Mark’s alarm was going off at about 4 am. Worried about waking everyone up he was rushing to get out of bed to turn it off. Maybe he forgot that he was in the bunk above me but I saw him crash to the floor…..hard. I have never laughed so much at 4 in the morning, but im not too sure that he appreciated that so much, Still…..hilarious.

And so here I am, its Wednesday afternoon and im just chilling out. Im heading back to Bondi Beach tonight to catch up with Nat and Ste and just chill on the beach. I have to be up real early on Thursday so that I can catch the Arsenal vs. Tottenham game. 5am is the time here when it kicks off, but I will 100% be watching us tear apart the scum in their own back garden.

Check back soon for updates and I may even have some pictures soon, I lost my camera charger and so am cameraless, which really sucks. Looks like im gonna just need to buy a new camera all together when I really should be spending my money on booze. Oh well….ce la vie.

So……Good morning, and in case I don’t see you…..Good afternoon, Good evening and Good night.
